The Red Ribbon Club (RRC) program is a voluntary, on-campus intervention, aimed at heightening the risk perception and preventing HIV among youth.
Red Ribbon Club has become a powerful medium to reach out to young people. Spearheaded by the TamilNadu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), with technical assistance from the centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC), USA, this program is supported by the Department of Higher Education and Department of Technical Education. Through this program the CDC demonstrates the importance of inter-sector collaboration to address the issue of HIV/AIDS.
The RRC empowers students in the age group of 17-25, by giving them information and life-skills to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and changes the most active among them into peer educators. Young minds are impressionable and reaching out to the youth can effect behavior change.
The Motto of Red Ribbon Club is to expose the awareness of AIDS to the society through students. It was started in our college from academic year 2009-10 and it was running successfully throughout a year. There are 130 students as volunteers of this club. Moreover 120 volunteers donate blood in and around madurai & dindigul Hospitals every year.
Activities of Red Ribbon Club like Blood donation camp, Celebrating life, interactive session with positive speakers and ICTC Counselors, peer educator activity , College level competition like that of elocution and essay writing regarding AIDS awareness and Battle against HIV/AIDS awareness ‘UYIRIN UYIRAE’ film screened by Audi-Visual Educational Charities are being carried out.
